Reasoning for a "Lab"

In order to better assess lab assignments, it seems we should first discuss the context for these assignments--the lab program itself. As a supplement to the class, lab has a unique function. Why do we require lab?

One good reason for lab is, of course, extra practice for the students. Yet, this could be accomplished with extra time in class. So an effective lab component provides something class might not.

The distinction between class and lab, mainly the ability to offer students material and assignments common to each developmental course regardless of instructor, is surely a strength. We can assure consistency for all students taking the developmental route and introduce the gradual progression of skils and processes necessary for student success from one developmental course to the next. Moreover, a lab program allows us to develop best practice and maintain up-to-date materials.

The above distinctions, or any others you would like to share, can surely help us focus on what is most needed to create a strong lab program. What other distinctions might we make between class and lab that will help us create a foundation for lab assignments?

At the same time we consider distinctions between class and lab, the reverse is also important--lab assignments should work in sync with class lectures and activities. Lab should compliment the course. How can we best accomplish this?
